The factory UV coating wears out
Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, which is tough and impact resistant but degrades rapidly under UV. Manufacturers spray a UV-blocking hard coat over the outside to prevent that. It works, but it has a service life, and in a climate with Fort Worth's UV index that life is shorter than the design assumed — usually somewhere between five and eight years on a vehicle parked outdoors.
Once the coating breaks down, UV reaches the polycarbonate itself and it oxidizes: yellowing, hazing and eventually a fine crazed surface. Road grit sandblasting the lens at highway speed accelerates it. The change is gradual enough that owners rarely notice until they compare with another car or drive an unfamiliar road at night and realize how little they can see.

The output loss is significant
A hazy lens does not block light so much as scatter it. Instead of a defined beam with a clean cutoff illuminating the road ahead, output diffuses in every direction. Less light reaches where you need it, and more of it goes into the eyes of oncoming drivers. On unlit roads west of Fort Worth, or on rural stretches out toward Weatherford, that difference is genuinely consequential.
It is also an inspection and resale issue. Severely clouded lenses draw attention on a state inspection, and to a buyer they read as a neglected vehicle in the same way a dirty engine bay does. Restoration typically costs a fraction of replacement lens assemblies, which on many modern vehicles run into serious money.

Why the last step is the one that matters

Mask and clean
Surrounding paint and trim are masked, and the lens is cleaned so sanding is not dragging surface grit.

Wet sand in stages
Progressive grits remove the failed coating and oxidized layer, each stage refining the scratches left by the one before.

Machine polish
The lens is polished back to optical clarity, which is where the visible transformation happens.

Apply UV protection
A dedicated UV sealant or coating replaces the factory hard coat. Without it the lens yellows again within months, which is why cheap restorations do not last.

Common questions
How long does headlight restoration last?
With a proper UV protective coating applied at the end, typically two to four years in this climate, and longer on a garaged vehicle. Restorations that skip that final step — including most inexpensive kits — start yellowing again within a few months, because the polycarbonate is left bare in the sun.
Do the toothpaste and bug-spray tricks work?
Both create a temporary cosmetic improvement by abrading or chemically softening the surface, and neither adds any UV protection. Bug spray in particular attacks polycarbonate and leaves it worse off. The lens looks better for a week or two and then degrades faster than it was before.
How long does it take?
Usually one to two hours for a pair, done on site while other work is underway. Severely degraded lenses need more sanding stages and take longer. It is a straightforward add-on to any other appointment and does not require the vehicle to go anywhere.
Can you fix moisture inside the headlight?
No. Condensation inside means the housing seal has failed, which is a repair rather than a cleaning job. Restoring the outside of a lens with water sitting inside it will look better temporarily but the underlying issue remains and will keep degrading the reflector.
Is restoring cheaper than replacing?
Substantially, in almost every case. Replacement assemblies on modern vehicles with projector or LED units are expensive, and often the housing is perfectly sound with only the outer lens surface degraded. Restoration addresses exactly that, and it is worth trying before spending on parts.
